Two years ago, we wrote an article about Instagram marketing strategies for brands in Singapore. Today’s post is about 5 essential Instagram marketing tips to enhance the effectiveness of your digital marketing efforts. Since Instagram has around 800 million monthly active users globally, it is definitely a social media channel you don’t want to ignore.
First Things First: Be Crystal Clear About Your Goals
Before starting an Instagram branding or marketing campaign, it is important to think about what you want to achieve so that you do not waste precious time, effort, and resources.
Some Instagram marketing goals include:
- Brand visibility for your product or services;
- Growing your community and building engagement;
- Increasing brand loyalty;
- Increasing conversion of interest to sales;
- Creating awareness for a brand’s mission or movement.
With the end in mind, let’s now examine some important Instagram Marketing tips you can use.
Instagram Marketing Tip #1: Hashtags Matter!
Also technically known as a metadata tag, hashtags are defined as a word or words after the “#” sign. First introduced on Internet Relay Chats (IRC–a popular social media channel 20 years ago), hashtags have now become a popular way for like-minded people to search for particular topics of interest effortlessly.
You can conceptualize hashtags into three categories:
(A) Brand and Campaign Hashtags
Alternatively known as “niche hashtags”, brand and campaign hashtags are hashtags you especially invent for your own brand. These are especially used in social media marketing campaigns.
Brand hashtags can simply be your brand slogan or the one or two words your fans associate your brand with. The more you encourage your fans and advocates to use such hashtags, the more people will remember them.
Make your brand hashtag memorable and unique to your company, cause or mission. For instance, the hashtag #MAGA or #MakeAmericaGreatAgain is catchy and easily memorable. Before deciding on a brand hashtag, be sure to do a quick google search to see if any other companies are already using this hashtag–you’ll want to be the first and most unique! The easier the hashtag is for your fans to remember, the more likely they are to use it.
Be careful of plurals. For instance, #WeLoveChocolate is sometimes easily confused with #WeLoveChocolates. In such cases, it would be wise to think of another brand hashtag.
Campaign hashtags in comparison are more short-term in nature. For instance, you can use campaign hashtags for special occasions or seasonal promotions, such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or Chinese New Year. You can even use it to run “comment and repost” Instagram contests! Here, a witty hashtag will make your brand more memorable.
That being said, how can you decide on a unique campaign hashtag? One idea would be to use the title of your current Instagram marketing campaign or associate a catchy word or a phrase that is linked directly to the essence of your promotion.
If you are using a campaign hashtag as part of a contest that you are running, it will also be a good idea to make it a requirement to use the campaign hashtag as an entry requirement to participating in the Instagram contest.
(B) Content Hashtags
Content hashtags are hashtags specific to your content. If you are selling pizza, do consider using pizza related hashtags such as #foodie #instafood or #foodporn.
(C) Trending Hashtags
Trending hashtags are hashtags that people are currently using. Most native social media users want to be “in the know”, so trending hashtags of cool pictures and captions have a higher chance of being viewed and regrammed (meaning to be reposted on Instagram).
Brainstorm, plan and come up with innovative hashtags–they are essential for success!
Instagram Marketing Tip #2: Know Your Tribe! Engage Your Followers
There are many ways to engage your followers. Here are some suggestions:
- Regramming some of your followers’ Instagram posts about your brand. Whenever you regram your followers’ own generated content, you empower your followers to feel special. This keeps them coming back and makes them feel that they are co-creating your brand’s story with you.
- Generate discussion through your captions–come up with a consistent voice! A great Instagram account has a unique voice and this is conveyed through the captions. The voice of a great Instagram account speaks directly to the brand’s most desired audience–it inspires, resonates, and articulates the deepest hopes and fears of the audience. When paired with a beautiful visual, a thought-provoking caption can raise engagement and make your fans return to your page again and again.
- Participate in comment threads. Sometimes you can also reply to your fans’ comments–this will make fans feel special as they know you read their comments and take the time to reply!
Instagram Marketing Tip #3: Create An Instagram Business Profile
It is always advisable to create or switch to an Instagram business profile (as opposed to a personal account) because you can then have direct access to statistics that track your fans’ engagement and behaviour. These data are under “insights”.
After converting your account, statistics on posts will be available. These include likes, comments, saved, impressions, reach, and engagement. Referring back to Instagram statistics is always useful because they are verifiable and if you ever do an Instagram advertisement, you will want to track the before/after results and conversion rates.
Additionally, you can include direct hyperlinks to your email address, contact number, and address on your Instagram Business profile. All these will make it convenient for prospects or customers to reach out to you or your sales representatives.
Instagram Marketing Tip #4: Be Consistent! Decide On An Appealing Instagram Account/ Theme
Remember to have a consistent brand personality and style on your Instagram account!
With this in mind, you need to first decide on your buyers’ persona and then have a consistent style or theme that would appeal to them.
Consistency is important because it builds your fans’ and followers’ trust in your brand. Nobody trusts a dog that quacks, for example, so try not to shock your fans unnecessarily with inconsistent styles and tones!
Instagram Marketing Tip #5: Have A Clear Business Profile
Ensure that your business profile is clear.
What do we mean by this? Well, even if you have a picture-perfect Instagram feed, it must be clear what your business is all about. Are you offering a product or a service? Are you a non-profit or for-profit organization?
Furthermore, ensure that there are no typos in your website URL, that you have a sensible Instagram handle, and a well-written and coherent Instagram description too. There is no greater pity than people who are initially attracted to your Instagram profile, have no idea what it is about, and do not bother to check further.
Therefore, ensure you have a well-articulated business profile!
