How to Optimize Your Website and Posts For Social Media

We have all heard about SEO or (Search Engine Optimization), but do you know that your website and posts need to be optimized for social media as well?

It’s generally done as part of SEO, even though it’s not really SEO. SMO (Social Media Optimization) is really ensuring that your website and posts look exactly the way you want it to show when it’s on social media.

Firstly, here are some signs that a social media content is not SEO optimised:

1. The picture is missing
2. There is no text
3. The whole URL is there, making it look unsightly.

Optimizing Text and Image for Social Media

Facebook uses the Opengraph Protocol to read your website, posts to figure out what information it should display when you share a link. These meta tags sit in the head portion of your HTML document. The best part of using the protocol is that once you have done it correctly, all the other social media like LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. will be able to benefit from the same information.

The most important meta tags for the opengraph protocol are,

og:title – The title of your website/post

og:description – A short description of the website/post

og:image – The URL to the image you want to show up

An example:

<meta property="og:description"    content="The Most Comfortable and Value for Money Clothes You can Buy" />

<meta property="og:image" content="http://sallyclothes.com/images/sally.jpg" />

If your website is HTML based, changing these tags would generally require you to fiddle with the HTML files. If you are using a platform such as WordPress, SEO Plugins like Yoast SEO will provide blanks for you to easily fill up this information.
